Canadian International Air Show
Celebrates 50th Anniversary in 1999

Canada Post to issue set of commemorative stamps

Toronto, Ontario, April 13, 1999 -- The Canadian International Air Show, the Grande Finale of Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition and one of Canada’s premier aviation demonstrations, is celebrating 50 years of performing over Toronto’s waterfront this year.

For five decades, military and civilian acts from around the world have demonstrated the latest innovations in flight and performance. This year’s show will include both old and new, as we bid farewell to a century that brought so much change. Acts booked to date include, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and a CF18, aerobatic champion Wayne Handley, glider Oscar Boesch, the Essell & Falkner Wingwalking Team, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources’ Waterbombers. Historic participants will include a Lancaster from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, five Harvards from the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association, a selection of aircraft from the Great War Flying Museum, and a P51 Mustang.

Other highlights around this year’s show will include a set of four commemorative stamps to be released September 4, 1999 by Canada Post, an Aviation Show during the 18 days of the CNE in the automotive building, an Ontario Heritage Foundation Heritage Plaque to be unveiled the first day of the CNE, and a specially designed 50th Anniversary logo.

1999 also marks the 75th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, also being celebrated with a set of commemorative stamps by Canada Post. The CIAS and the RCAF will celebrate together when a specially painted CF18 flies at this year’s show.

It has also been recently confirmed, that HRH The Duke of York has accepted an invitation to be the Royal Patron to the Canadian International Air Show (although he is unable to attend this year’s show).

The CIAS is also pleased to announce the continued support of Tim Hortons as a major sponsor.

As usual, the show will take place over Labour Day weekend: Saturday, September 4th, Sunday, September 5th and Monday, September 6th. All shows begin at 1:00 p.m. and are free with admission to the CNE.
